My name is Avissa and I come from Iran. Before coming to Germany I got a Master’s Degree in Sweden and I am moving to Canada very soon.

How can you describe your experience in Germany?

Great! I did not feel integrated at first, but once you get in, then you are in! People are super nice in Cologne. I also had an opportunity to befriend a lot of Europeans. Plus things just work here and everything is clear to the point.

But if you compare Germany to Sweden…

Sweden wins all the time! Their system is just utopia, everything works with whipped cream and chocolate on top! Everybody speaks English; they actually apologize for starting a conversation in Swedish. Here there is an expectation that you speak German and the smile can fade away when you start speaking English. The level of trust in Sweden is just unbelievable. With your social security number you can do pretty much everything, including getting a certificate without filling out paper forms. Swedish people might be a bit colder, but if you get into the circle of trust, you can make sure you are close friends. And then of course the weather…
